X-ON/X-OFF (Transmitter On/Transmitter Off) -- Control characters that are embedded in the data stream that are used for flow control, instructing a terminal to start transmission (X-ON) and stop transmission (X-OFF). Also known as 'in band' flow control. 'Out of band' flow control is accomplished with signal levels in the connector i.e. RTS and CTS can be on Pins in the RS232 connector for 'out of band' flow control). |
